Like lots of people, I’ve always really love getting gifts for my friends, and the only thing better than buying them just the thing they wanted is making something yourself. It’s fun for you to do, lets you practice those craft skills, and because of the time and care taken over it, feels just that bit more special for the person receiving the gift. Nowadays, when money’s a bit tighter for everyone, this isn’t just fun but more practical and useful than ever. Here are some ideas!
Decorate a mug – For only a few pounds you can pick up a decent sized plain white mug. Then all you need are some paints (make sure they’re the kind that won’t wash off easily, even with careful hand washing!), some creativity, and off you go. Out with tacky “Best friend/dad/mum” mugs, and in with personalised, cute designs. There’s also been a lot of talk on the internet about using marker pens, which can work too, but again be careful to warn the giftee to wash it carefully.
Wine sling – We’ve all got that one friend who likes a drink of wine more than the rest of us, and what better way to show how well you know them than with a holder for their glass? You’ll need a nice necklace or a scarf, and something to put the glass itself in. The only complicated part is finding some old lanyard or key ring clips and securely attaching them to the holder. Hey presto! Hands free wine carrying.
Decorate a phone case – Some people really love their own individual phone cases, which you can buy everywhere. Just like mugs though, these can be tacky, so why not make your friend their own one? You’ll need a plain phone case, and some marker pen or maybe paint. Unlike mugs though, you won’t have to worry too much about the design fading (unless your friend is very silly and washes their phone). For the extra special touch, you can even add some stickers or glitter from a craft shop!
